A Prayer for Our Nation and Our Common Home

Creator God, We bring before you our nation and our world at a time when creation itself seems to groan. We see rising temperatures, fierce fires, floods and storms; we hear of homes destroyed, livelihoods lost, communities displaced and lives tragically taken. We pray for all who are suffering today: for those who mourn, for those who have lost homes and possessions, for farmers whose land has been devastated, and for communities living with fear and uncertainty. Draw near to them, O God, and strengthen all who work to rescue, shelter and rebuild. Forgive us for the ways we have treated your creation as though its resources were limitless. Awaken in humanity a deeper sense of responsibility for this beautiful and fragile earth, our common home and the only earthly inheritance we have to pass to our children and generations yet unborn. Give wisdom and courage to governments, scientists, businesses and world leaders. Move them beyond fine words to courageous action. Help us all to recognise that caring for creation is not someone else's responsibility, but a calling shared by every nation, every community and every person. Holy Spirit, change our hearts. Teach us to consume less, waste less, protect more and live more gently upon the earth. May fear give way to determination, indifference to compassion, and despair to hope-filled action. Creator God, you entrusted the earth to our care. Give us the grace to cherish what you have made, the courage to protect what remains, and the wisdom to leave behind a world in which those who come after us may flourish. For the earth is yours, O Lord, and everything in it. Amen.
