A Prayer of Gratitude for Closed Doors

Gracious and all-knowing God, we thank you even in difficult and disappointing times. Thank you for prayers answered as we hoped, and for those answered in ways we did not understand. We give thanks for doors that opened before us, but also for doors that remained firmly closed. For we cannot see what lies beyond every threshold, nor know the dangers from which you may have spared us. Had some doors opened, we might have entered places that would have wounded us, diminished us, or led us away from your good purpose.

Forgive us when we mistake your protection for rejection, your redirection for abandonment, or your loving “not yet” for silence. Teach us to trust that what feels like disappointment today may one day be recognised as mercy.

When our plans fail, keep us grateful. When the way ahead is blocked, give us patience. When we do not understand, deepen our faith. Help us to believe that you are still guiding our steps, closing some doors, opening others, and walking faithfully beside us through every season. For mercies seen and unseen, for dangers known and unknown, and for your unfailing care over our lives, we give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
